Why Call Cathy, Chase?

antenne-mobile-montagne

Quartzite Mountain Electronic Site

On February 6, Chase Merritt placed 5 calls from his cell phone that pinged a cell tower on Quartzite mountain near Victorville, Ca. They were at 11:30, 11:31, 11:33, 11:34, and 11:52 am. This tower is approximately 1.5 miles from the McStay gravesite. This is not new knowledge. Well, for some it may. We choose to believe this is a fact and not junk science.

I’m not sure what is more important – Why Chase called who he did or who Chase called when he did. On the night of the 4th, Chase had 5 missed calls from one number and that number he called back. In the Prelim, the DA asked Detective Boles if this number was to Catherine Jarvis. The detective stated he did not know who it belonged to. It is possible that the DA did know it belonged to Jarvis and assumed Boles had identified it.

As far as the number that Merritt called in the late morning hours of the 6th, the DA didn’t ask about it, perhaps because it was the same number as on the 4th. But why did Merritt make seemingly frantic calls, one after another, to the same number? What happened? And why was Merritt in the desert when he claimed he wasn’t?

Who was the 5th call to at 11:54?

Q Turning your attention to February 6th, 2010, Saturday,
what did your analysis reveal on that day?
A The first phone activity is at 10:46 A.M. It contacts a
tower in the Victorville area near Interstate 15.
The next activity is at 11:30 A.M., and continuing
through 11:52 A.M, contacts the cell tower in the Oro Grande
area just north of Victorville in the High Desert, near
Interstate 15.
11:53 A.M., contacts a cell tower a little bit to the
south, back up near Victorville.
THE COURT: What time was that?
THE WITNESS: 11:53.
And 12:49 P.M., contacts a cell tower in the Victorville
area.
And then at 1:30 P.M., has contact with the cell tower in
the Oro Grande area, again from a direction pointing to the
south in that case.

Pg 85 Chase Merritt Preliminary Hearing.

10:46 – 1:30. 2 hours, 45 minutes. That’s a hell of a long time to bury the bodies, assuming Chase did this. Assuming, he hid it in that time frame. Thinking about how much Chase shut his phone off and went dark, he most likely got to the site a lot earlier. Still, what is up with all that extra free time, just hanging out round Victorville?

In reference to the above snip from the Prelim, why does it seem like he is moving back and forth between the graves and Victorville. Or, was he actually at the gravesite that long and his phone pinged off different towers?

A Distorted Timeline of Events

Were the bodies stored somewhere in Victorville, brought there a day or two earlier and Chase retrieved them? Would this explain the dual set of tracks? I’ve been told that this would be risky for him to do but let’s consider a few things.

  • Chase gambled, big time,  so from the get-go he’s already a risk taker.
  • He drove to Fallbrook and committed premeditated murder, on a family.
  • Chase returned to the Fallbrook home, painted and cleaned up.
  • He buried the family, what is believed, on February 6 and buried them in the desert in (somewhat) broad daylight. .
  • He stole thousands of dollars from his boss, via his own computer as well as the Fallbrook computer.
  • Chase called Quickbooks posing as Joseph McStay to request to cancel the account.
  •  There’s a multitude of accounts where Merritt ripped off clients, friends and loved ones.

Chase Merritt was not a person afraid to take risks, at all. His whole life is chock full of risks. It’s my belief that Chase Merritt made two separate trips. Possibly on different days. But after reviewing the Prelim over the last few days and the multitude of discussions that have been had on the matter, I can’t be swayed from this. There is however a compelling argument for the two sets of tracks to have been made on the same visit.

I can’t buy into the ‘single-drop’ theory. For me, it doesn’t work. While I respect my colleagues, I respectfully disagree. One set of tracks seems to have been made during wetter conditions, or post wetter. The other, well it is possible they were made in damp, possibly dry conditions. I will attempt to recreate this theory soon.

So far, I have nothing against Cathy Jarvis. In fact, my heart goes out to her  and how this tragedy that has enveloped her family, her children. Chase Merritt’s actions in February 2010 have destroyed and deeply wounded many lives. So, I can’t imagine the anguish of wondering…..

But there are some things that will inevitably be brought out at trial. Catherine Jarvis will most likely be called as a witness. But I want to take a look at something. I’ll just put it up and you decide. This is not a witch hunt and not meant to turn into one. I do believe Catherine to be a good person, a loving mother. There should be a respectful discussion about this. Chase Merritt could be very manipulative and deceptive in his dealings. I know this first hand from talking to many of the people he was deeply involved with.

Compare the above quote from the Prelim and the screenshot below.

If the said number was Jarvis’ number, I found it on a simple Google search, seen above. I lifted it from the warrants. I have to think these detectives are more savvy than myself.

So the question is, who is the AT&T number that the defense wants records for? Is it Catherine Jarvis? Or some unknown subject? Did Chase call and meet someone else in Victorville for those 2 hours, 45 minutes?

  1. Chase called his brother Paul Merritt. There were red tie downs like truckers use found at the gravesite. Paul is a long distance trucker and his home and property are just minutes from the graves. Chase probably went to Paul’s house. This is just my opinion but if you look at the location for Paul’s house and consider that Chase, Bennett and Paul are the original Merritt brothers it does make sense. Their dad left the mom and the three boys grew up together. Paul needs to be investigated in my opinion. Maybe he has an alibi that is concrete. Chase could have left the bodies in his truck at Paul’s place and then dug the graves in the rain over maybe two days while staying at Paul’s without Paul even being there. This may be the reason for different truck tracks. Two different trucks. One is Chase’s and the other was his brother Paul’s.

    • Also, Chase was not an ideal companion for Cathy. They had three children together and lived numerous years with a hand to mouth existence. Cathy saw something in Chase that none of us folks can even begin to fathom. She put up with his shenanigans for many, many years. Why might I ask that when the Joey McStay family disappeared, she and Chase broke up? Something stinks.

    • I have thought it possible that Merritt may have hidden the bodies in a secure outbuilding on a property close to the graves. If he knew his brother was out of town he very well may have taken advantage.
The graves were only 16″-18″ deep and were dug very hastily. If Merritt had spent two days digging them each grave would have been at least six feet deep. Imo.

      • You probably are correct Fran. Chase called Cathy in a panic after what he had done finally sunk in and the adrenaline was wearing off. After watching that video above, even though the graves were only 3 minutes from the road, it was still quite a distance out into the desert. It also appears to be a really rough ride and quite a workout for a truck.

        Liked by 1 person

        • It does look like a very rough ride. “I have to keep going fast or we might get stuck”
Somehow I don’t think that poor road conditions would be much of a deterrent for Merritt though. Being the dessert enthusiast that he was. I could see him making two short trips and I can see also imagine him getting it done in one trip.
Since I’m sure Merritt won’t be confessing anytime soon I’m looking forward to hearing the prosecution’s theory of how they think it happened.

Mo, you may know more than I do about the relationship between Cathy and Chase, but I remember thinking it was sad when I was reading in the probable cause that Cathy was Merritt’s only constant long term friend and that even after they split up they were in daily contact with one another.

          • Fran, I do not know too much about Cathy. I can say that she has adorable children. Her youngest with Chase, Ray Merritt, is an aspiring child actor. The little guy is gorgeous with red hair. This is so tragic for her and the kids. I can not even imagine what things would be like for them.

      • Hi ya Fran. But weren’t both graves the length of the adult bodies? I’m aware he has experience with digging in what I assume is some hard packed sun-baked dirt. Wonder if he had recently been doing digging at the time, or if his hands are always calloused. Or if anyone noticed new callouses or blisters then. And – what tools make it easier to dig by hand in that area, shovel and pick axe?

  2. It will be interesting to see the location of the cell phone in the warrant SW 14-1293 even if they don’t know the individual who had that number. Could it be a burner phone? I guess we’ll just have to wait.

I’m surprised though because as I had heard before CJ had AT&T as her provider. I wonder if she changed carriers after they split up?

  3. Thats an odd symmetry of five phone calls isn’t it. Five to Merritt that flood his phone when he turns it back on in Mira Loma. Five from Merritt out in the desert. And Mike saying Joey got five phone calls, one after the other, the evening of the fourth.

    • Perhaps some were dropped calls due to poor reception. It happens so often where I live, I often make many calls in a row as I get disconnected or the person calling me does.

Btw, has it been reported how many times CJ met Summer? I really wasn’t aware they knew each other until reading comments here this morning.

      • It’s funny you should mention the dropped calls. I was just reading on Gravitas site that the five calls that Merritt made from high desert were only a few seconds long and may have been dropped calls due to poor cell reception.

        • They could have been dropped calls. Maybe that tower doesn’t get that nuch maintenance considering it’s remoteness. But there is a radio station tower there as well. Seems like a prime location for reception if a radio station is also using it.

  4. “The McStay family has not only been put threw the loss of there son, daughter in law,and not to forget the two children. But now good old chase, sits in jail and still continues to give the McStay grief over this murder case by not confessing. Maybe it’s time for his family to face the truth. That there wonder family member created all of this havic on the McStay because of pure greed. He believed he could kill them all in cold blood and get away with it. Chase and his family (it’s time to man up and take your punishment) Here is why you really want not to talk in public and be careful what you say. During a court break I was out the pretrial.
I had went to the small lunch room.
Chases family member was talking about how the evidence was not very good against chase.
Also I had to listen to his lawyer lie about the evidence to the news media. In my opinion I never herd any one lie and deceive the the public. Straight out open bare face lies. In some cases I think that why they call them liars not lawyers.
Really all of them must have been in a different court room then we were in.
I herd the FBI not the locally sheriff or police testimony.
They they had located a certain phone calls that chase had made from the place he had buried the family in the desert. Also up and down highway 15 remember the McStays family car was found in san Ysidro by the Mexican border.
No disrespect to the San Bernardino sheriff’s dept. Because the McStay think they are the best police agency in the world. They respect, honor, and love.sbso and the sbda (procescuter)
    This is one person’s opinion.
FRIEND ALL WAYS TO THE MCSTAYs
P.S. joey McStay was a great guy I had the pleasure to talk to him several times.
Michael McStay I have been associated with mike
For 15 years worked side by side with him and all ways will be a friend.
Michael’s mother to know her is to love her.
I Guess if you write a book about the McStay maybe you might want to meet the McStays plural
As I understand it a certain author in eating his facts, information. oh yeah the the fictional piece he claimed was about this case. Hopefully he didn’t loose to much money. My family supports the McStay and will help them in every way we can to move foward.”

  5. From the warrants:

“I analyzed Merritt’s telephone records and learned Merritt was in close contact with his girlfriend at the
time, Catherine Jarvis. Through Merritt’s cell phone records and information given by Jarvis to San ,Diego
Sheriffs personnel, Jarvis was found to have telephone(s) (909) 226-1197 and (909) 374-8951 on her
account. There were several telephone calls between Merritt and Jarvis made around the time of the
family’s disappearance. I authored a court order for Jarvis’ telephone records to attempt to further
corroborate statements made by Merritt regarding him and Jarvis’ whereabouts around the time of the
disappearance. The phone records show conflicting information as to Merritt’s and Jarvis’ whereabouts per their statements.”

    Now THAT is damn interesting.

    Liked by 3 people

    • What if Merritt had both his cell phone and the 909-226-1197 with him at different times and the defense is trying to prove he didn’t have the phone because Cathy had it. What if the prosecution already knows that Merritt had the 1197 phone when he claimed he didn’t and that Jarvis had it. So the defense experts are trying to disprove some of the evidence we haven’t seen or know about yet.

Now this may seem like a wild theory, but it’s no wilder than what the mindless idiots on Bakers blog have said and believed. Why did Jarvis have two cell phones, was it to hide information and her and Merritts conversations even prior to the McSTay’s case? Could they have used this cell to keep it hidden so no one would be able to follow there contact and location or to hide from people trying to tract Merritt down for all the trouble he caused them?

People can make all kinds of excuses but there aren’t many real reasons to have two phones other than maybe a business phone and a personal phone. But then there are nefarious reasons that are far more telling. .

  6. Could one of those Jarvis numbers have belonged to Taylor? I’m counting 4 phone numbers for them, Chase’s cell, landline, and 2 other cell numbers. That’s a lot of phones for broke folks.

      • I think a cellphone for a teenage girl is an essential. For social reasons and safety reasons. Maybe Taylor had a part time job and paid her own monthly bill.

She was also going to college IIRC. Poor kid. Her dad is facing the death penalty. What a horrible thing to have to endure. Her name is Taylor Jarvis so at least she is not sporting the Merritt name. That is a small blessing. She also moved to LA.

    • One thought I had about the calls from 1197 to Joseph, might have been Merritt using that phone or CJ trying to find Merritt or asking for help for bills from Joseph because Merritt was busy gambling away their money. Maybe that’s why she was calling Joseph because Merritt wasn’t answering his cell!

  8. Personally, I think by 1046am the bodies were well in the ground. Chase had to have been tired as hell, likely got a bit of rest and cleaned up and felt confident enough to turn his phone on by then. (10:46) Guessing he buried them late night on the 5th/early morning on the 6th. Those graves had to take a long time to dig by hand…( btw – Do they really think it was dug by shovel? When they first found the bodies, everyone was saying bobcat? did Merritt’s brother own one? Why did the bobcat theory come to an abrupt end?)
Either way, he would need to revisit the graves once daylight came after resting to make sure nothing looked out of order, maybe on his way, he decided to call Cathy since he was finally able to breathe. He probably got no answer, she was probably furious he pulled another all nighter with his phone off, pissing their money away. Goes back to VV, and cleans up wherever he was staying, at his brothers house maybe? (if that’s true that he lived there.) Gets a bit paranoid one last time since it will be his last trip to Victorville for a while and as a final goodbye/closure of sorts goes to the graves for a second/final time, just to reassure himself he did a great job and no one will have a clue anyone what he just did. Satisfied, he heads home.
Well….. fine. I accept that it might just be my slightly OCD brain, but I would’ve double and triple checked, and that’s what the timeline looks like he did to me. Not that I’d ever be a loser, like Merritt, but just saying.
Also, as much as I want to feel bad for Cathy, she had an idea something was off, unless she too was an addict of some sort. Wives and family members of addicts make up excuses for their loved ones and half believe their lies – but they ultimately know they are shady but as a coping mechanism, give them passes, because once the smoke clears and the anger fades, they convince themselves the addict isn’t THAT bad of a person.
I don’t need Maeve popping up to whine that I’m speculating so here’s your disclaimer: I’m speculating. And it’s likely wildly off.

    Liked by 3 people

    • No. No. It is not wildly off. In fact, I find it completely believable. With a little bit of research, I found out that Paul Merritt has moved to Albuquerque, NM. I do not know if he sold his home or if it is sitting vacant. I saw a picture awhile ago and it is a 3 bedroom home sitting out in the middle of desert scrub. He has 2 outbuildings also. It looked very undesirable, and creepy with metal junk around the yard.

      • Yeah I don’t know if he lived in VV at the time. He looks like a well-to-do guy BUT I have heard nothing but bad, very bad things, about him and brother Bennet. That’s all I can say on that.

ABC is pretty good in researching this area. Maybe they have an idea where Paul M lived in 2010.

    • This fits with my theory of Merritt having driven up to Victorville and spent the night parked somewhere out of the way. If his brother was out of town he may have used his place and headed to the gravesite at first light. Just light enough he didn’t need headlights to drive up the wash.
I think he felt confident using his phone because it never occured to him that anyone would associate the area with the McStays. And, he never thought the graves would be discovered. Moo lol

  9. I’m moving more to the center about the single-drop theory. There are two different trajectories in the tracks. If it was a single drop, my thought is it happened slightly different. But, it still doesn’t make sense to back in, bury 2, pull out, back in 15-20 feet away and bury again. If there is a reason for doing this, I’m lost on it. Maybe he thought his first position was too exposed?

My first theory is that he got stuck in the mud and perhaps that is why he tried to frantically call Cathy?

Was he calling Cathy so much because she knew what he did and he thought she went to police? Like he called her to say it was done and then she didn’t pick up. 11:30, 11:31, 11:33, 11:34. It’s very telling.

I don’t like what we are reading in the warrants, that possibly CJ was complicit in the murders. But, they only arrested Merritt. If she was a witness for the prosecution, Taylor most likely would not have ever been on Baker’s show. However she is an adult. Maybe her mother doesn’t tell her everything.

When I talked with Cathy, before the family disappeared, she told me to look to Summer as being responsible for the disappearance. Who does that sound like?

    • Sw 14-1594 probable cause (which is page 220 in my adobe reader) reads as if investigators believe she was not complicit. I’m not able to copy the text to paste it here.
Paraphrasing : detectives interviewed Jarvis numerous times and were aware that Merritt and Jarvis were together during the time of the murders and for many months after. That it’s likely, because of the continued friendship between them, that Merritt may have kept some of his belongings with Jarvis and that she may not even be aware of the items significance…

    • One possible reason I can think of for moving the truck to the next grave is if he felt/thought the truck was too exposed, too visible in its first parking spot. I cant tell anything about elevation or the height of the berm from the video.
He arrives at dawn, parks the truck, and is digging away, intent on the task at hand. He returns to the truck to retrieve the body and notices how much lighter it has become. He may have decided to move the truck to a slightly lower elevation or where it will be more hidden behind a screen of grease wood.

      • The more northern grave parking spot seems to have more brush. I think as the morning wore on and the day grew lighter, he moved the truck to a more concealed location.

          • Yeah. I haven’t visited the site so I’m only going on what I imagine his mindset may have been and the general conditions at the time.
His hand is injured from the night of the fourth, which makes the digging slow and painful. It’s taking far longer than he anticipated. Its getting lighter and traffic is picking up. He’s only halfway through.
He moves the truck because he’s nervous about it being visible. Or, he moves the truck because his hand is injured. Its easier to move the truck twenty five feet or so than it is to walk carrying the bodies.

            • But why not bury the bodies together or in two graves, side by side? That’s my hang up. Perhaps he thought the soil might be looser at the other spot, but it’s only twenty feet. Maybe the bodies were too heavy, however not too heavy to drag.

              • Maybe there were large rocks under the sand? Maybe he originally wanted to dig one deep grave, but because he was exhausted and had an injured hand was only able to dig to a shallow depth. Maybe he thought that the additional footage between two shallow graves would lessen the chance of animal activity? Or lessen the chance of being discovered by a passerby?
Maybe he doesn’t think the same way you and I do and had a completely different reason. I’m reminded of him insisting on panning for gold in a spot where none had been found.

The azalea was in a one gallon pot. I wore gloves and commenced to making more of a divot than a real hole. Granted this is southern soil, clay and rocks of all sizes. My husband doesn’t bust ground for a living and it took him over two hours to dig a hole to bury our cat in the woods on our property, and that was an area with better soil but still rocky. Both shovel and pick axe were used. We don’t own a ditch witch. He’s also dug down to the main water line when there has been a leak, takes hours for that too.

Are we forgetting that summer was ticketed for not having kids in car seats? If trooper had seats and summer had to go out I would imagine she put the kids in the truck and hoped not to get stopped.

    • She did get some type of traffic ticket. I don’t recall who said it was for a car seat violation or if both boys had even born yet. It was in Orange County and you can no longer pull up the records by name for free. So I can’t use it to jog my memory.

        • It could have been. I think Mike or another McStay insider explained what the ticket was issued for (over on the old insession board). Something to do with one of the kids is my memory of it.

Wow these people will attack a woman for such a minor thing but won’t admit or recognize the evidence and facts of a murderer or murderer. How much more proof does anyone need to see how ridiculous they are and how they are grabbing at anything to keep from admitting the truth. So petty!

She is always so negative and does not hesitate to use inflammatory name calling regarding Mike McStay. She is filled with hate and I believe by her writing style, she is also “60 days in” and “MakeAmericaGreatAgain”. They are filled with negativity and their lives must be miserable. Now Elizabeth K is not jumping on the Trump bandwagon that Baker is promoting. I am glad that she does have the courage to state her opinion. That is a plus. Maybe someone over there has some kind of brain where they think for themselves and does not worship the ex-rev and await his personal emails and phone calls. Baker is a bit too friendly and some of his women just lap it up.

For the little kids that don’t know, you could go to inside arenas and they may search you for a camera, or booze, or weed, but no metal detectors, folks could smoke cigs indoors, and once inside I don’t recall anyone getting busted for the weed. People it has to be Mikey! Look back at every interview! He wanted more money from Joey and Summer said no! Enough is enough! And perhaps to save his ass with cartel he sold his brother!

My question is how exactly does someone sell their brother to the cartel? The cartel is only interested in money for any kind of payback. They do not just collect bodies in return for a debt payment. Now Mike McStay is the cartel guy and not Joey. What a load and it goes on and on. Another day, another wild theory. It appears to be endless.

    • So far we have had Mike, Joseph, McGyver and others involved with drugs and the cartel. They can’t make up their minds, but they know Mike is guilty. Don’t know what he is guilty of but now it is not killing his brother but selling him to the cartel.
So what next? I’m sure they will come up with some other totally obscure and outlandish story or theory.
Remember we have had them accusing Joseph of killing Summer, Summer killing Joseph, Mike killing Joseph with Summer, Mike and Chase involved in killing all of the family. We have had Joseph and Summer guilty of getting their children killed, Susan covering for Mike because she knew he killed the family.
It just gets more and more of a wild fantasy according to those over there that just can’t and won’t accept the real evidence and facts that Chase Merritt is sitting in jail charged with this violent murder and all the evidence available as of now, overwhelmingly leads to Chase Merritt and no one else.

Someone actually said that they could tell Erin was involved because of her smile at the cross memorial.

  21. Why was Merritt in the Santa Clarita area on Friday morning? I have read somewhere that a Paul Mitchell salon is there. Was he out there to establish an alibi, or supportive evidence for the large check he forged that had Paul Mitchell in the details? Was he dumping evidence? Revisiting a spot he knew of and thought might be a good burial site?
There isn’t any detail given as to the type of phone activity that triggered the pings.

Turning to Friday, February 5th, 2010, what were the
6 results of your analysis on the defendant’s cell phone records
    7 on that day?
8 A Well, at 7 A.M. is when he originates a phone call. It
9 appears that he’s checking his voice mail. His phone was in the
10 general area of Upland, California, at that time.
11 The next activity is at 10:45 and 10:46, which is in the
12 general area of Santa Clarita. At 10:59 A.M. he has contact
13 with a cell tower in the general area of Interstate 210 near the
    14 San Fernando area.
    15 And then between 12:49 P.M. and 2:23 P.M., he contacts
16 two towers that are adjacent to each other in Rancho Cucamonga.
    17 Then, from 2:32 P.M. to 3:54 P.M., he contacts two different
18 towers. Both are in the Rancho Cucamonga area. And after the
19 3:54 P.M. call, which was in the Rancho Cucamonga area, there’s
    20 no call activity until 9:17 P.M.

    • I don’t think Merritt spent the night at his home on the night of the 4th. I think he drove up to RC to use his phone and pick up supplies, then he returned to Fallbrook to continue “cleaning up”. By 7am he’s back in Uplands and heading to SC. Does he have the bodies with him in the back of his truck? On Gray’s video we see a clip of Steph Watts video where Mike describes Merritt’s truck… Mike says Chase’s truck has a BOX on the back. Merritt’s truck back was securely covered so it’s possible he may have stored them there. He may have thrown out the box later if it retained the bad smell. Merritt may have parked his truck and used a different vehicle to drive to Santa Clarita.
At this point I’m not sure how valuable my speculation is about any of this. Just wish the trial would hurry up and get started.

      • Here is a bit more speculation. Maybe Merritt went to Paul’s house and parked his truck with the family hidden inside. The photo that I saw of Paul’s house shows that he had no close neighbors and it is out in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by desert scrub. With Paul being a long distance trucker he could of very possibly not have been home at the time. Merritt could have left his truck at Paul’s for a few days easy enough. Paul’s house was very close to the grave site. I wonder if his phone could have pinged off that same tower, while being at Paul’s, that LE claims Chase’s phone pinged off of on the 6th near the graves.

        Liked by 2 people

              • Unless LE knows more and is holding back, I’m not so sure anyone else is involved with helping him. We only have the DA focused on Cathy’s number. Merritt has been in custody for almost 2 years and they haven’t arrested any one else. But, maybe they don’t have enough.

So far, Cathy seems to be the only one Chase called.

                Liked by 2 people

                • Yes, I agree. If Merritt used any property in the area near the graves it was most likely without the owners knowledge. I am in no way suggesting that Paul or anyone else knowingly helped Merritt.

                  • I am not accusing Paul Merritt. I am only stating my speculation about how things might have unfolded. Merritt is a known criminal and could have broken into a home, found what he needed and took complete advantage of an innocent person without their knowledge.

                    • Mo, I think you and I are both on the same page with the speculation. I agree that Merritt would most likely have no qualms about trespassing or breaking into a place, “borrowing” a car, if it served his needs. But maybe he didn’t need to break in, Chase may have had permission to use Paul’s place when he was away and knew where a spare key was kept.

Bennett, Chase and Paul are the original Merritt brothers and they all have the same mother. Their dad divorced their mom and then married a woman who had all the sisters, if I recall correctly. That woman that spoke on Baker’s radio blog was Chase’s stepmom, I believe.

  23. I thought we could dismantle and destroy their argument as a group. I could answer each one of these easily. But I will address #3.

No way would there be 5 gallons of human fluids within the home. There are 1 1/2 gal worth of blood in every person. Yet 2 of these were very young children. The heart would have stopped pumping blood once they were dead, they could only bleed completely out if they were hung up like a hunter would do with a kill to bleed out. Most of their blood would remain in the body, mainly because they were bludgeoned and no major arteries were cut.

So “Agent”, how is it not relevant that Chase’s phone pinged in the very area that the family was found, 2 days after they disappeared, in a place he claimed to not have been in a year? For the prosecution, it doesn’t matter when the bodies were buried, they don’t have to prove that, but……..oh, he just happened to be right there, when he was not.

AGENT FOR THE DEFENSE.. IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH YOU HAVE GOT TO KNOW THE FACTS

Prosecutor’s proof they died in the home and buried in the desert on the 6th

    1. Joseph was wrapped in the home futon cover

    2. Summer had a horizonal paint drip on her bra

    3. Chase’s phone pinged near the gravesite on the 6th

    WHAT THEY ARE NOT SAYING

1.They dont know when the bodies were buried so the 6th is relevant how ?

    2. measuring the tire tracks the correct standard practice of center to center didnt fit a Chevy
truck so we made them work by measuring from the outside to outside edge.

    3. Just how much blood 2 adults and 2 children plus other fluids was there to deal with.
Answer 5 gallons total plus another gallon of other fluids (see pic below) The Medical Examiner
said that most of the hits with the sledehammer were premortem so that means the heart is pumping
all the blood out. The truck would have been some kind of God awful mess, bloated bodies, blood, fluids
from mouth eys nose every opening. But they were never coveredm how we know this is because the cover
would have went in the grave with them why take it ?

    4. That Chase drove 50 miles west to Santa Clarita and other places with only Joseph wrapped in something
    with his truck swarming flies.

Blow flies are attracted to dead bodies and often arrive within minutes of the death

    5. That it would be almost impossible for a young heathy person to dig 2 graves start a third
put the bodies in the graves and now have to cover them up

    6. That there was a fatal accident on the 15 which stopped traffic for hours the morning of the 6th

  24. 4. That Chase drove 50 miles west to Santa Clarita and other places with only Joseph wrapped in something

Blow flies are attracted to dead bodies and often arrive within minutes of the death

The UK forensice site I visited stated that
Blow flies will be present on a dead body within one hour and begin laying eggs. The eggs take 24 hours to hatch into larva. The larva eat and grow for 12 days before beginning to transform into adult flies.
Colder than usual weather will slow down the life cycle of blow flies.
Blow flies DO NOT LAY EGGS AT NIGHT.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>«««««««
So while flies would be present within an hour, no eggs would be layed until the following morning. If the bodies were kept well covered outdoors in cold rainy weather there would be minimal fly activity on Friday. By Saturday they were buried.
When Mike saw Merritt’s truck on the day he met him in Fallbrook to check on the house the truck had a box on the back.

    • All that stuff was probably placed in 30 gal trash bags. He also could have taken a large trash bag and put it over the head and torso and duct taped or painter’s taped it closed. Then put another large trash bag over the feet and covered up to the waist of the victims and sealed that up with the tape. This would keep any body fluids from escaping and tainting his truck bed. Sorry for the gross thought.

  26. Merritt had access to other vehicles.
Here’s my theory, FWIW. Merritt removed the victims from the house and drove them north. He parked the truck in a relatively secure location. He uses another vehicle to return to Fallbrook. He feeds dogs, cleans, paints. He leaves in the morning and heads out to SC. He disposes of evidence and maybe calls Paul Mitchell so he has a reasonable explanation for being there and for the check he will forge that afternoon. He returns to Fallbrook Friday night and continues to clean and paint. He drives north and gets a bit of sleep and buries the bodies Saturday….
Merritt was known to on gambling sprees that lasted a few days. He was used to being up and busy for several days at a time.

    • Maybe this definition of delusional thinking will help us grasp what is going on with Baker’s hate blog.

A delusion is a belief that is clearly false and that indicates an abnormality in the affected person’s content of thought. The false belief is not accounted for by the person’s cultural or religious background or his or her level of intelligence. The key feature of a delusion is the degree to which the person is convinced that the belief is true. A person with a delusion will hold firmly to the belief regardless of evidence to the contrary.

That last sentence kind of says it all.

      • I personally have a very hard time understanding why the people on Baker’s hate blog can not understand how Chase could have committed this crime. Besides the evidence that has been stated by the DA, I have come up with my own reasoning and a motive. I believe that Chase took advantage of Joe’s generosity for many years. He owed Joe quite a bit of money. I think that Joe discovered that Chase was stealing from him and Joe confronted Chase about it. He probably said that he was going to contact LE about the theft. Chase is a known criminal and if he committed another felony and was found guilty, he was facing the three strike law and life in prison. Chase killed the family to keep Joe and Summer quiet about the theft and keep them from going to LE. Simple. No conspiracy. When considering this scenario, Chase has way more motive than Mike McStay. I just do not get Baker and his crew’s justification for going after Mike incessantly. This is my own opinion.

  29. Now Faker is trying to use Patrick’s private emails to show that even Patrick suspected MM of killing the family. In reading through the emails you can almost hear the desperation in PM. Poor guy was frantically trying to figure out what happened to his family and was obviously grasping at straws. Leave it to Baker to betray PM’s trust by posting the emails and then for the icing on the cake he points fingers at PM.

I can’t begin to fathom what PM was going through. The fear and heartache had and has to be unbearable. The mind can be a tricky and powerful thing. Imagine the head games that PM has gone through. Just like law enforcement, every single person involved with the McStays had to be looked at and every scenario must have played out in Patrick’s mind. I’m sure he feels awful for even considering MM may have been involved and probably beats himself up daily for it. He certainly doesn’t need Baker and his “investigators” dredging up the past.

There was a FB page created that I was a member of & was given the boot when I began questioning Patrick McStay about Mikey. One of those members in the group was the 1st to my knowledge to discover the tire tracks at the gravesite. Rick knows who I’m talking about & even had him on his radio show. Gray Hughes discovered the tracks after the burial site was found by doing Google satellite searches. He has also done several YouTube videos on the McStays. I believe that is where Mikey got his knowledge of the tracks so Mikey deserves no credit for finding them although he made it appear like it was HIS finding.

Thank you for the explanation, Sheryl. Why am I not surprised.”

This is hilarious. The group this idiot is referring to, Patrick McStay was not even a member of, so he did not “boot” you.

Most of the people following the case had seen those tracks in news reports and pictures being posted online since day one. MM was probably following very limited because he was a GRIEVING BROTHER and first realization about the tracks was when he first saw them. It was probably surreal, I’m sure. Have you ever lost a family member to murder? How about 4? How about them being buried out in the desert? What is your reaction? The discussion about the tracks was extensive on Websleuths after they were seen online and long before it was discussed by those on that FB group.

Much accredit to Gray in his research on the subject but Gray Hughes did not discover the tracks.

    • Cornelius is right I asked Patrick about that site and he told me he never was a member of that website and he wasn’t even familiar with it. What is even more interesting is the fact that even if he were a member he couldn’t boot anyone by just being a member. Everyone knows you would have to be an administrator or it would have to be your site to boot someone and he was neither and not even a member. So again more lies PROVING how they lie and make stuff up. They like Baker prove how dumb they are by just opening their mouths and they are caught by common sense facts. Everyone knows that anyone can’t kick someone off a site just being a member. But I guess they learned well from how Baker and his lies and if he has no prove he just makes something up and says its proof.

  35. I heard that she was given the boot because back at a time when another Facebook group were waging a campaign against Gray, with the help of Rick Baker, making false accusations about Gray. From what I’ve heard that Facebook group that booted Sheryl was the one called What Happened To The McStays and they booted a bunch of people because of the trolling that was going on from Baker’s camp, and Sheryl was part of Rick’s group. Rick’s campaign of harassment was so severe at that time that there was no other option but to remove people associated with him. Patrick has never been on that Facebook page mentioned.

I just emailed him at wintergroup@hotmail.com. Here was the msg: ‘Hey Robert, you still alive? Unlike the McStays, of course.’ Let’s see if he responds.

    • Typical Baker trying to stay relevant by harassing people like Winter just to get him to respond and Baker can start an argument so people will join in. Baker is so predictable I have to laugh. This is how he keeps going by lying, harassing and attacking people so it looks like he is relevant. Who will be next? He’s trying to pick through all the people in this case family or not so he can find the one that will stir up the most arguments that he thinks will get him the most attention. The guy is a big JOKE.

Rick, what happened after the reward offer? Did he just disappear?

    Rick Baker says:
    07/26/2016 at 9:37 AM
Yep, never heard from him again after I demanded we meet in person. He didn’t like that idea, threatened me some more (I told him he knew where to find me) and then he was gone.”

This is a blatant lie, they were involved up to the end of production of the E Investigates show. Well at least until they dropped them.

If this is a rel email, it’s obvious PM was referring to the reward Winter was offering, not the disappearance of the family.

Leave to Rick to to take everything out of context.

    • It’s really pathetic.

I have news for them, this is how it’s going to go: You will all run around in circles wasting your time obsessing about Mike McStay, who you don’t know, you will ignore all the evidence against Chase Merritt because you are blindly and clinically unable to see what is in front of you, flailing through the forest like you’re in a bad dream and cannot escape, trying to latch onto something, until finally the trial starts against Merritt. The evidence and then some will be presented, you will find out that LE know where Mike McStay was that dreadful day, and the realization will hit you that Chase Merritt is guilty of the murders and you just wasted all those years obsessing about Mike McStay. Or will you realize, you might just wake up in a mental institution rocking back and forth “Mike McSay is guilty” over and over.

      • When the trial is over and Merritt is on death row, they will claim that the DA and Prosecutor are corrupt. They will say all the evidence was rigged to make Chase guilty because he was just their patsy.
Baker will continue his blog of hate and spin all the evidence to fit his “Chase is innocent” agenda. Just wait. He will probably even claim the jury was a set up. The whole case is a big conspiracy because Ramos wants to be the new Atty General for CA.

        • While they’re proclaiming Merritt’s innocence and whining about the conspiracy and corruption we’ll be laughing all the way to the gas chamber. Actually, I don’t want to think we’ll be laughing because this is not a laughing or “fun” matter, as Baker likes to say, but you guys know what I mean.

    • How about the picture Baker posted claiming it was the 100K reward. Money spread all over a bed. LMAO It was a fake picture and when he was confronted he said oh it wasn’t 100k (something like) it was 25K.

Then there were all the changes to the reward like remember the wording it had to be a “guilty conviction for 1st degree murder” to get the reward. Not as normally worded as “arrest and conviction”. Then the reward was changed to divide the money up so it he could get out of paying the entire 100K. Then later the reward was changed again and a time limit for it to be paid was put on the reward.

Also remember there never was any proof of the money or the amounts and he never answered when asked many times why he didn’t make the reward payable through CrimeStoppers. That was because he would have to produce the money, a bond or account designated for the reward in a bank. No he never did this because it was just another of his SCAMS.

I could go on and on but it would just be redundant. Baker is so phony and lies so much you could write a book titled “No Goodbyes” The Lies Go On And On And On! The life of Rick Baker! LMAO

  40. Something just occurred to me. Baker is now saying that MM killed the family but not too long ago he was saying that Joey and/or Summer did something to cause their murders. So what exactly did they do that caused MM to murder them? In the world according to Baker and his dim wits, the McStays were simply living their lives and prospering. I guess living the American dream caused their deaths? When put into perspective it sounds absurd, right Baker?

  41. See, here we go again. Another day and another fabrication from Baker to his disciples. Someone asked about how Tracey and Blanche felt about CM being arrested for the murder of the family, and Baker replied:
    Rick Baker says:
    07/27/2016 at 2:14 PM
They both thought Mike McStay did it. From the moment they arrived at the house, til today. They believe Mike McStay was involved.

The reason I personally feel that this can not necessarily be true is the fact that Tracey and Blanche must absolutely hate Baker. He does not know how they feel today. I am sure they have no contact with him. After he published that blasphemous book about Summer and her killing Joe and all the horrendous things he has said about Summer, I would think that they probably want to ring his neck or worse.

        • Baker will never accept anything less than MM being charged and convicted of something because doing so would mean that he’d have to admit to being wrong, again. He will die believing that this entire case was some huge fraudulent conspiracy perpetrated by the FBI, SBSO, the McStay family and their supporters, etc. He’s certifiable 5150 and has himself convinced that his lies are somehow truths.

I don’t feel bad for Becky. She can walk away at any time yet she has chosen to stay. She has the money, family and resources to kick him to the curb but she stays. Plus, if we are to believe Baker Becky supports him and his attacks on the family. There have been several occasions when Baker has made comments about Becky wanting him to reopen his blog as well as her being part of the interview involving MM and co-authoring a “book”. Nah, Becky Is no mild and meek wallflower who we should pity. The dogs on the other hand, poor babies. Too bad they can’t run away.

  42. Baker’s mental health appears to have gotten worse since he became involved with this crime. Progressively worse. He seems very unstable anymore and is fast to ignite with anger and vile remarks against anyone that says something he does not like. I wonder if Becky made him sign a prenup?

  43. This is an outright lie. Nowhere in the preliminary hearing is it said that police were alerted by Merritt. What was said : Cathy Jarvis encouraged Merritt to call police and he said “No. I don’t want to get involved”

    Rick Baker :
On February 10, Sheriff’s deputies went to the house for the first time after Chase Merritt called to report that Mr. McStay was not responding to phone calls or emails. The deputy knocked on the door, but left after seeing nothing suspicious.

    • It was DK who called for a welfare check on Feb 10th. That was why the deputy went to the house. It wasn’t Merritt. I don’t know if Baker is lying or just losing his mind.

      Liked by 3 people

      • Yes, everyone knows it was DK. He tried to contact Joseph, I’m guessing on the 5th, because he needed money. He saw the emails not being replied to which was uncommon. He tried contacting Summer. He tried contacting PM. By the 10th, with no contact with anyone, he took action.

Chase called Joseph on the 5th and the 8th. No voice mails left, like he said. No calls on the 6th, because Chase was….busy.

  44. While rereading the preliminary hearing I noticed something interesting. The testimony concerning the neighbours video surveillance footage was limited to debunking San Diego’s claim that it was the trooper seen leaving the residence. All we heard was how investigators were able to rule out that the vehicle seen in the video was the trooper. We have yet to hear the testimony from the video analyst as to how investigators identified the truck as Merritt’s vehicle. We shouldn’t assume that the testimony is in anyway complete. The truck will be moving very slowly as it exits the driveway and turns on to the street, possibly allowing for many unblurry frames of video to analyze for unique markers.

For contrast look at these exhibits of trucks driving at rural backroad speed, not sure what that is maybe 30 mph or 50 kph. But much faster than rolling out of a driveway.
Security camera footage used in the Bosma murder trial. Michael Plaxton was able to say the vehicles were consistent with the victims and suspects vehicles, but was unable to say they were the same vehicles.

    • Ok so they aren’t moving as fast as I remembered from the first time I watched them. But it’s amazing, to me, that vehicles can be clearly identified. Especially in the second video.

      Liked by 1 person

      • That is amazing that they could identify the vehicles in the videos. I wonder if they’d be able to identify them if they weren’t trying to prove that they are the vehicles involved, if that makes sense. Lol

        • I know what you mean. Lol. I think it would be much more difficult to id a vehicle without something to compare it too. Their training probably includes that sort of testing and practice.

  45. Um Dumb Crayon,
Hate to burst your bubble but Michael McStay did not “decorate” the grave site. The kind people who erected the crosses placed the rocks, etc.

and finally, he decorated the grave sites – something I’ve only ever seen on roads where a car accident became fatal. I’ve never known any other story of a murder victim’s family decorating the spot where a loved one’s body was found -so this implies that he knows the site was also the site where they died.
