Where is Steven Geisler?

Fool’s Gold

Lytle Creek, nestled in the canyons above Rancho Cucamonga, is rich in history of mining, shootouts and murder.

In addition to the native Serrano Indians, the first white settlers to the area were the Mormons in the 1850’s.

image

After the Gold Rush, boom towns and camps with such names as Cerro Gordo, Eldoradoville, Goldstone, Ragtown, Providence, Dale and Coolgardie would spring up almost overnight. Just as fast as they became known, they would soon fold once the the gold veins paid out. The town of Lytle Creek was the exception to the rule. The town survives. People still do mine these areas, by means of a type of prospecting called “Dry Washing” as well as some panning. Basically, instead of water to disperse the gold from lighter soil material, a machine uses vibration to achieve the same outcome. It’s very popular and effective in areas without water.

image

In 1851, not long after gold was discovered in the deposits of Lytle Creek, claims sprang up like wildfire. Word has it that there were claims covering every square foot of the canyon, including up the steep slopes. One particular outfit, Harpending Mining Corp., began mining using new technology – hydraulic mining. Essentially they would use high pressure water to wash away the mountainside to have the media funnel into a sluice box. Eventually that sluice box would be 5 miles long. The operation would draw out about $2,000 a week worth of gold.

Hydraulic mining would be outlawed in California in 1884.

By the 1950’s the Harpending company had extracted $60,000 of ore from the canyon. Harpending sold its operation to a man by the name of Luis Abadie. Later there was a dispute between Abadie and Harpending regarding water rights. One day, Luis Abadie just showed up at his estate with his horse and wagon, shot dead.

Every Man’s Land

Or, no man’s land. Blood had been shed as early as 1878 by way of a family feud fueled by inheritance and greed. Over the years the canyon would become a dumping ground for bodies. Outdoor enthusiasts and hunters would from time to time happen upon the remains of some poor soul, left to scavenging animals. Gun owners would frequent the area of the upper reaches of the canyon beyond the little town of Lytle Creek (also referred to as Scottland) to let some steam off. It was a common sight, the wash to be littered with household appliances, furniture, vehicles and oil drums all with a generous amount of bullet holes. While this practice was being unregulated, with the guns also brought a bad element to the area. Unless you had a gun, you really entered the rural area at your own risk. Eventually the “shooting range” was banned from usage and the county went in and cleaned up the wash. Later they set up a real firing range that is today heavily regulated.

Steven Geisler is missing.

Geisler was last seen on May 10, 2013 at 4:30 pm in the town of Phelan, Ca. which is located a couple miles southwest of Victorville. On May 18 Geisler’s white 2002 Ford F250 was located abandoned on Lytle Creek Road and Forest Service Road #3N06. A missing person’s report was filed on June 11, 2013.

Nothing more is known about the case. There are no news articles. The Stockton Police Department in northern California currently is handling the case and my only guess is because the report was filed there. A blogger made contact with the missing persons unit and they confirmed that Geisler is still missing. I haven’t found any reason to believe Geisler was a resident of Stockton, only that he seems to have some connections, like family, there.

Upon some cursory research, I found that Steven Geisler may have lived and grew up in Norco, Ca. Norco is neatly sandwiched in between Corona and Mira Loma. Mira Loma seems to have some bizarre re-occurrence and I’m not sure what to make of it.

Given what is historically known about Lytle Creek, what we know about Chase Merritt’s prospecting history and his brief interactions with fellow prospector “Jerry”, there are a few other things that are sure to set off alarms.

Remember, Chase Merritt was a welder. He lived in Homeland, Ca.

Homeland

Chase Merritt, carefree at home.

It is believed that Geisler may have worked for or been associated with a company called Western Construction Auctions, or WCA, based on the shirt he wore for his driver’s license pic.

image Geisler

WCA’s main location of operation is located Perris, Ca. That name may sound familiar, it’s where Chase Merritt’s truck was impounded. WCA is also 8 miles from Homeland.

WCA is owned by the same people who own this operation.

WCA 1

They’re located in Fontana, Ca. which is next to Rancho Cucamonga and the closest city to Lytle Creek.

Field Trip

I decided to do a road trip to Lytle Creek. I had been there many times since my early years and it left a lasting impression on me. There are 3 forks, South, Middle and North. We always explored the Middle fork as it was the most scenic and least traveled. The South fork was always congested with families flanking the banks of the creek, lounging about in the water and usually a couple coolers filled with beer. I guess it’s because it’s the most accessible. We prefer to tread off the beaten path. Or, the less beaten path. I had only been on the North fork once and never had a need to go back as I don’t own guns, for lack of convenience rather than choice. I used to visit the area 3-4times a year but had not been in over 10 years. I had friends that I had wanted to take there and this was a good  opportunity to check out the rural area Geisler’s truck was abandoned.

Before we went I checked Google maps of the location. I went right to the LC rd and #3NO6 intersection. I was a bit taken back.

image

What was it? A white truck? A white utility truck? Or was it a Forest Service truck? Was it parked or driving? When was the shot taken? Was it Geisler’s?

Was it Merritt’s?

I needed to get there now more than ever. I had to see the area.

I filled in my fellow travelers about exactly what we were doing and why. I had to tell them the Geisler story, about a missing guy I knew so little about, just that he was missing. They knew about the blog and the demise of the McStays. They were excited to go on our little side excursion.

Btw, I know reports list the road the truck was towed from is listed as #3N05, however the only #3NO5 is located many miles away in the San Bernardino Mtns and nowhere near LC rd.I can only conclude that it was a typo.

At the firing range the pavement abruptly gives way to an unforgiving road. Studying some maps, the road that intersected with LC rd was labeled #3NO6A. I wondered why there was an “A”, was there a #3NO6B? Not that I could find. But once we got to our destination it became very clear. LC rd became #3NO6 and the offshoot was #3NO6A. Weird, but alright.

image image

Forest Service Road #3NO6A to the left.

In the missing persons report, it states the truck was towed from LC rd and  #3N05 (#3N06). Considering  LC rd turns into #3N06, this maybe why. Geisler’s truck may have never been on #3N06A as I originally thought. Nonetheless, we were off on foot to explore.

An immediate look around and it was for the most part, unimpressive. A big, wide wash and a lot of solitude (with the exception of gunfire off in the distance).

We hiked up the road about 1/4 mile. I wasn’t really looking for anything, only making curious observations of openings in brush that may have looked like someone pushed through or bush-whacked. My friends though we’re a bit more detailed, finding what they thought was evidence, blood on a rock or a wheel weight from a rim. “Did he wear contacts?” the woman asked, holding up the empty container of disposable contacts.

We really found nothing, which I had expected. We went on to our second and main destination, the Middle fork. I suppose if I was a gun enthusiast or hunter this place and it’s offerings would be ideal. Maybe we will return here later in the year to further explore “3No6”. Maybe by the next time we’ll have better clarification as to exactly where Geisler’s truck was found. And if he had perhaps known Merritt.

For me, these questions remain:

Why is there a specific time stamp to when Geisler was last seen?

Was he alone when last sighted?

Was his association to WCA somehow connected to his disappearance?

If he lived in or around Norco, what was he doing in Phelan, 45 miles away?

What is the connection to Stockton and why are there no news articles?

Why did Merritt turn his phone on in Mira Loma, not Rancho Cucamonga?

image

Just when did Merritt end up in Homeland and why was his truck towed to a Perris tow yard?

Was Chase contracted out to fix equipment for WCA?

Why did it take almost a month before anyone realized he was missing?

Did Steven Geisler suffer the same demise as the McStay family? Is he somewhere 100 miles from here?

  1. Fantastic article! Great photos too.
Lots to think about. What’s the business in Fontana that WCA also owns, I can’t make it out from the photo.
After another read through and more coffee I will have more questions for ya….as usual. Lol
I hope San Bernardino is looking into any possible connection between the two.

  2. You’d think if he was 1,109 lbs, he would be easy to find. Smh. Typo, much? Who runs those sites? Anyway, it’s possible the n305 wasn’t a typo and they say his truck was found in a Forrest. It doesn’t look too foresty where you were at, is n305 more in the Forrest?
I took my son to pan for gold at Lytle Creek once, but to be honest it was kind of creepy to me and The whole time I was there, I kept watching around us. And there was a mountain lion running around, killing dogs so that didn’t help, either. There are limited places to pan for gold in that area, dry washing is a must if you live especially in the inland empire, like we did. I tried finding places to find gold in Victorville, as that was only 45 minutes away, but Lytle creek was the closest, unless we had a drywasher. The gold community is rather small, imo. has anyone searched the gold forums for posts made by Chase?

  3. About Merritt’s truck being towed to an auction in Perris.
Does anyone have handy the sw for Merritt’s truck, specifically the probable cause section? ? I can’t find it on Balderdash’s site, and for some reason I’m unable to open the sw PDFs on my device. . They go into detail about tracking down Merritt’s truck. It would be interesting to look at the date it was reclaimed.
Probably most auto dealers in the area use those Perris auctions?

    • Haven’t found the search warrant yet, but I did find this entry in the comprehensive time line on ws:
In Aug 2014 investigators learned that Merritt’s 2000 Chevy 3500 pickup was sold Aug 13, 2011.
Twenty months prior to Geisler going missing.

  4. Here’s what was happening just before Merritt accessed the storage locker. Looks to me like Merritt wanted to remove his stuff and probably pilfer Joey’s stuff, maybe do some cleaning as well before MM had a chance to see and review contents.

    from the ws time line:

March 26, 2010 Mike takes over EIP in order to finish orders left behind by his brother.
March 30, 2010 FBI joins investigation.
April 5, 2010 Mike and Susan meet with FBI

From the warrant for the storage locker:
During the analysis, Smith located a transaction on April 9,2010 at AMS Mini Storage in Pomona, California for $134.50. Smith conducted a records check on AMS Mini Storage and learned it was within a half mile of a business building used by Merritt and McStay. Merritt’s financial records do not show any other transaction for the business in the months before or after the April transaction.

    • It is possible he could have gotten hurt while out hiking. Or lost. But that area really isn’t that dangerous or easy to get lost. There is a story of a guy who stayed at the car while his friends went for a 25 minute hike. When they returned he was gone. This was in Holcomb Valley, which is one of the places “Jerry” went with Chase. Maybe Geilser killed himself and he’s out there. It’s pretty common. The #3NO6A does go back for 2-3 miles and Lytle Creek road ends up in Wrightwood on the other side of the mountains.

I’m not confidant this case has been investigated thorough enough, if at all, considering the listed agency is in Stockton.

  5. Just wanted to give a bit of info as a former Homeland resident and 17 year resident of the general area. Most cars that get impounded end up in Perris because that is where the closest police impound lot is. Sorry if this posts twice, never posted here before. Long time lurker.

  6. Hopefully WCA kept a detailed record for Merritt’s repossessed Chevy truck. Wouldn’t it be interesting if their records show that Geisler was directly involved in the repossession or auctioning of Merritt’s truck?

I also think the geographic ties between Merritt and Geisler are interesting, forming sort of a triangle: Homeland/Perris to Rancho Cucamonga/Fontana/Lytle Creek to Phelan/Victorville.

The Bill Wheeler dissapearance is also interesting, with it’s timeline, similarities to the McStay disappearance, and location of Wheeler’s torched truck in relation to the McStay gravesite.

It really makes me wonder how many people Merritt has done away with.

  7. Nice deflect, this murderer and the mother of his children certainly are not stupid people, Chase Merritt is guilty of murdering an entire family, including two small boys. You’d really have to lack intelligence to buy anything in this “crime blog.”

    • Deflect? Not sure what you’re referring to. Can you elaborate?

Thanks for the reply. While most here are certain of Merritt’s guilt (read above title) I can’t be 100% certain his girlfriend/wife knew what was going on or what happened. I have had contact with her, before and after the arrest. There was zero indication she knew anything or had any inclination he did something. In fact, she pointed to the wife (Summer) which I believe was a direct influence from Chase due to what we now know.

      • Obviously…..she wouldn’t admit anything if she knew.. I don’t know, I’m hoping if something, anything was fishy…she would be a woman of character and tell.

  8. Please explain this comment to me? I really don’t get it or what the message is. This went right over my head! Are you saying that CJ is stupid not to have know what was going on or are you saying that Summer was the cause of Merritt’s actions? Clarify please.

  9. “The posts I made yesterday were about the posts on the other site, the so called “angry” blog, BEFORE the innuendo’s were cleaned up regarding CM’s involvement, his whereabouts, and reasons for his possible involvements.
I’ll “assume” members from that site came here and saw my posts and decided it best to clean up their act.
Should have done a screen save.”

LMAO. Laraxs, there has been no “cleaning up” of posts. No sure what blog your reading but the posts here are exactly what has been posted. Posters here can’t edit their posts either. Maybe you should cut back on the wine.

    • I guess Laraxs is so bored with their non existent blog conversation that he/she has decided to try and rile us up and get a reaction..

Actually this tactic is one Baker used very often. First lying about the content of a blog or fb page or forum, in an effort to discredit said blog, then when he was called out or questioned about that content not being there lying again and saying the blogger was shamed into scrubbing or changing the contents. Rb most recently used this tactic with a tweet about the Mcstay family headstone.
Laraxs are you Rb in disguise? . Lol

  10. When I see Merritt’s children, it’s really hard for me to fathom that, a man that raised such beautiful and well natured kids, could do this heinous crime. I just can’t believe it. So when I hear or read these comments from family members, people who have lived with this man for years, several years and say “He absolutely did not do this”, I have to step back a bit because the confidence and stability of thier belief rings true. I can’t fault them for believing this man they knew, loved and grew up with could be so brutal. It’s unconscionable. It’s like someone telling you “your mother murdered kittens. She skinned them and them burned them alive”. In your mind, that’s impossible. It’s the same way for Cathy, and I imagine Mechele as well.
I should clarify my earlier statement, that is my opinion that CJ knew nothing. After talks with her, she had nothing to give about why they disappeared only that she wondered if Summer had something to do with it, she did not paint her in the best light, much like Chase did. So that is what I meant about Chase possibly influencing her thoughts. Yet, she gave personal accounts about Summer that he may had not known about.
She swears by her statement about him not taking the last call but I believe this may have happened on a different night.
Anyone here knows that I am not a Chase sympathizer but I do feel for these women and children caught in the mire.

My Cathy messages will not come out until after the trial. For now, I sent the detectives all her messages

  11. Dennis Rader.
    Robert Yates Jr.
    Gary Ridgeway
    Norman A. Porter
    To name a few….

“Like some other noted murderers, Rader defies the perception that serial killers are social outsiders and loners who do not live normal lives and attract attention with obvious, disturbing behavior. Both serial killers and criminal fugitives often assimilate within society and are skilled in not bringing attention to their secret lives.

“People are confusing psychopathic behavior with psychotic behavior,” said Pat Brown, criminologist and head of the Pat Brown Criminal Profiling Agency. “People who are psychotic appear to live in their own reality. Their behavior is not going to be confined to the norms of society.

“A person who’s a psychopath knows what the norms of society are and has a hatred of society,” Brown continued. “They’re not going to be the guy who’s frothing at the mouth. He wants to create his own reality, but he knows he’s confined within societal norms. So, he’s going to hide his illegal activity. Clearly, he knows what works within what society dictates.”

    • “also this:

That ability to work within society while hiding their other criminal life is what has enabled some killers and fugitives to appear so “normal” to their family, friends and acquaintances. It is also why families, friends and acquaintances are shocked when their loved ones’ heinous crimes are revealed.”

  12. But, either way, let’s be real – murders take time. CJ knows if he was not around much that weekend or not. Unless she’s a druggie, or a drunk. My husband is a hardworking, stand up guy, but if he disappeared a lot, I’d be wondering what double life he was living. And if the cops came to me today saying he may have murdered so and so….I would be like, well….he got home at 5pm, like every other day, but I guess any things possible. I went to eat with him from 530-7 and he stayed up and I went to bed, so after 8pm I can be certain he was watching tv,but not 100% he never left the house, as I was sleeping.

When was the last time you seen JM ?
    CM would say Thursday .
CJ would say you (CM) called me around 9PM. Where were you ?
    She would remember that day.
    CJ knew JMHO.

    • I’ve also thought about this exact same thing. CJ probably did ask CM where he was the night of the fourth…. Maybe CM said something like, “I was so pissed off after the that lunch meeting with JM I decided to blow the rent money at the casino. The cops are already looking at me with suspicion because of my record if they find out I was at Pachanga gambling I could get in trouble with my PO or worse they might think I had something to do with their disappearance. Just say I was here with you that night OK it’s way less hassle.”
She may have believed him when he said he was gambling (or he may have told her he did some burglaring) and she lied to cover that.
It’s pretty hard for me to believe she didn’t start putting the pieces together at some point before he was arrested.

  15. Looking at the ages of their kids, we could assume CJ met CM sometime during the mid to late 1990’s. From the court records, it looks like those were the years that Merritt either A) started to clean up his act, or B) managed to not get caught participating in any illegal activity.

We’ve seen Merritt’s ability to present himself as a humble and caring guy, from his media interviews. He was also apparently able to charm his way into getting deposits from his customers before disappearing with their money, if we are to believe the online complaints against him and his fountain design businesses. Then, also consider his short-lived business partnerships after the McStay family disappearance. Obviously, he was able to present himself as a decent guy, before he ran off with their money.

My point being, he may have just as easily charmed CJ into believe he was a good man. Once they had a couple kids together, she might have felt that she was stuck with him, and if she did lie for him, it could have been out of fearing Merritt and/or Merritt’s family, fearing she and her kids might end up out on the street, or one of many other reasons. It wouldn’t necessarily mean she participated in the crimes or even knew about what Merritt had done after the McStay disappearance.
